Requirements & Qualifications
National Diploma (NQF Level 6) or a Trade Certification (Millwright) in Electro/Mechanical Engineering or relevant comparable qualification as recognised by SAQA with a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant post trade / qualification experience.
Duties
The incumbent will be responsible for providing maintenance, and repairs of the Electrical, Mechanical and Civil services and equipment at the SANAE facility. Must ensure the efficient maintenance, service ability and operation of the Electrical, Mechanical and Civil equipment. Perform daily routine checks on the equipment to ensure all is operational. Troubleshoot and maintain equipment to ensure that all equipment runs efficiently. Execute planned and unplanned maintenance activities as per schedules. Physically monitor and control of the facility processes. Ensure the service ability of all additional base related technical systems and equipment. Prepare monthly reports on all work performed, conditions of electrical and mechanical equipment, and spares utilised or required. Analyse previous Electro-mechanical technician (Millwright) reports and prepare program of action. Conformance with environmental and safety requirements. Conduct safety inspections. Examine equipment and complete safety checklist. Comply to OSH ACT requirements.
Candidate Profile
A Wireman’s license will be advantageous. Competent in electrical and mechanical plant maintenance, diagnostics and repairs with proven fault-finding capabilities. Experience with pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pipe fitting, plumbing, hydraulics, refrigeration, air conditioning. Experience in diesel engine maintenance; and Plant, Factory or Building maintenance management. Good understanding of Basic PLC programming and fault finding; Variable Speed Drives (VSD) and Servo Drives; Electrical fault finding and panel design (From 24VDC up to 400VAC); HMI Programming and fault finding; and Electrical schematics. The incumbent has to be familiar with good workshop practices, including an understanding of current work health and safety policies. The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.
The incumbent will execute duties at the Antarctic Base and adhere to the health, safety and environmental requirements. The successful applicant will spend a full year (December 2026 to February 2028) at SANAE base. There is no option to return to South Africa before February 2028. The ability to work and live with small groups of people is thus essential. Although the base is well-equipped with e-mail, fax and satellite telephone facilities, the applicant has to be self-sufficient and self-motivated. The location may affect both the physical and mental well-being of the incumbent, their family and close relationships. Candidates must be physically fit, mentally strong and prepared for physically challenging and satisfying work. In addition the successful candidates may often be called upon to work long hours in extreme conditions on duties unrelated to their function. Short-listed candidates will be subjected to screening and security vetting to determine their suitability for employment. Appointment to these positions is subject to a rigorous medical examination as well as psychometric assessment, which will be arranged for at no cost to the applicants.
